John Clayton Mayer (Bridgeport (Connecticut), 16 oktober 1977) is een Amerikaanse singer-songwriter en gitarist die in Montana woont. Na afbreken van zijn studie op het Berklee College of Music verhuisde hij in 1997 naar Atlanta (Georgia) waar hij zijn talent doorontwikkelde en naam begon te maken. Zijn eerste albums Room for Squares en Heavier Things verkochten goed. In 2003 won hij tijdens de Grammy Awards de prijs voor de "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" voor "Your Body Is a Wonderland".

Mayer begon zijn carrière voornamelijk met het spelen van akoestische rock, maar schoof langzamerhand naar het bluesgenre. In 2005 speelde hij dan ook met bluesartiesten als B.B. King, Buddy Guy en Eric Clapton. Zijn album Continuum, uitgebracht in oktober 2006, getuigt het meest van zijn liefde voor blues. Tijdens de negenenveertigste editie van de Grammy Awards in 2007 won Mayer de prijs voor "Best Pop Vocal Album" voor Continuum en "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" voor Waiting on the World to Change.
