Van wie was Jacobus V van Schotland?

Jacobus V, Engels: James V (Linlithgow Palace, 10, 11 of 15 april 1512 – Falkland Palace, 14 december 1542) was koning van Schotland van 1513 tot 1542.

Zijn vader, Jacobus IV, werd gedood in de Slag bij Flodden Field (1513) toen Jacobus net één jaar oud was. Zijn moeder was Margaret Tudor. Jacobus werd onmiddellijk tot koning gekroond na de dood van zijn vader omdat de Schotten niet wilden dat zijn moeder, een Engelse, de macht over Schotland zou bezitten. Het land werd gedurende zijn jeugd geregeerd door regenten, eerst zijn moeder tot ze hertrouwde, en daarna John Stewart, hertog van Albany. De stiefvader van Jacobus V, Archibald Douglas, greep de macht, verjoeg regent John en zette Jacobus V gevangen in Edinburgh Castle. Maar toen Margaret hem verdreef, bevrijdde ze haar zoon en begon hij aan zijn eigenlijke ambt als koning.

Jacobus V werd een legendarisch persoon door zich als een gewone man voor te doen en zich onder zijn onderdanen te begeven omdat hij wilde zien hoe hun leven was.

Hij stierf op 14 december 1542 op 30-jarige leeftijd, zes dagen nadat zijn tweede vrouw, Maria van Guise, het leven aan een dochter had geschonken. Zijn beide zoons waren zeer jong gestorven en de zuigeling werd onmiddellijk tot koningin van Schotland uitgeroepen. Als Maria I Stuart (ook: "Mary, Queen of Scots") regeerde zij tot 1567.

Elizabeth Bethune, o Beaton (m. después de 1544), fue una de las amantes de Jacobo V de Escocia. Su hija, Lady Jean Stewart, se casó con Archibald Campbell, V conde de Argyll.

Elizabeth era hija de Sir John Beaton de Creich, un sobrino de James Beaton, Arzobispo de St Andrews. De niña, la hija de Elizabeth, Jean, fue criada en casa de María de Guisa (reina de Escocia como esposa de Jacobo V, y brevemente en la guardería del Príncipe James, Duque de Rothesay, hijo varón y legítimo del rey.​

Posteriormente, Elizabeth se casó con John Stewart, IV Lord Innermeath, con quien tuvo dos hijos, John Stewart (d.1607), y James Stewart, V Lord Innermeath. Elizabeth y su marido John recibieron tierras en la parroquia de Inverkeilor en mayo de 1544. Se casó en segundas nupcias con James Gray.​

Lady Margaret Erskine (8 October 1515 – 5 May 1572) was a mistress of King James V of Scotland and mother of Regent Moray.

She was a daughter of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine and Lady Margaret Campbell.

Euphemia Elphinstone (also written Euphame or Eupheme; born 11 May 1509) was a mistress of James V of Scotland and the mother of his son Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney, born in 1532, as well as another child who died in childhood. One of her sons with her husband John Bruce was Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie (1547–1617), the builder of Muness Castle.

She was the second daughter of Alexander Elphinstone, 1st Lord Elphinstone and Elizabeth Barlow or Barlay (c. 1476 – 10 September 1518), an English woman of the household of Margaret Tudor.

The family hailed from Elphinstone near Stirling. Her brother Alexander, Lord Elphinstone, died at Edinburgh following the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh.

Euphemia married John Bruce of Cultmalindie (c. 1507 – March 1547), and had five children: Laurence Bruce, Robert Bruce (born c. 1536), Henry Bruce (born c. 1538), James Bruce (born c. 1540) and Euphamie Bruce (born c. 1542). There is no firm evidence for any death date.

Her children and descendants were significant in the history of the Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands. Laurence Bruce and Robert Stewart and their families were to become closely entwined in the Shetland Islands, of which Laurence Bruce was appointed Sheriff by his half-brother.

According to legend, many people in the Shetland Islands are descended from her; in particular, those named Bruce are supposed to be descended from her children by John Bruce.
